If you are planning to become pregnant, it would be convenient for you to start thinking about your health for a couple of months before you stop using contraceptives. There may be medical issues that you have not yet thought of, such as if your immunization card is current, so it is advisable to have a pre-pregnancy checkup with your midwife or family doctor.
When to stop contraceptive use?
With some contraceptive methods such as the male or female condom or the diaphragm, you can start trying to become pregnant as soon as you stop using the contraceptive.
With other methods like the combined pill, patch or ring and contraceptive injections, it may take some time for your cycles to normalize after you stop using the contraceptive method. Therefore, you may want to stop taking the pill a couple of months before you start looking for pregnancy.
It is a good idea to plan a healthy diet: if you follow a healthy diet before becoming pregnant, you will count on the nutrients needed to help your baby from the day of conception onwards. A healthy diet includes regular and balanced eating, and reducing "fast food" and processed foods. I will include an entry on healthy eating later.
Take Folic Acid
Folic acid supplementation helps prevent neural tube defects in the baby. Health guides recommend that women planning to become pregnant, or women who are pregnant, take a folic acid supplement containing 400 micrograms of folic acid each day.
Ideally, you should start treatment three months before you start trying to conceive and maintain it during pregnancy. Also note that if you follow a healthy diet, you already ingest a certain amount of folic acid from cereals, beans, green leafy vegetables and orange juice. Hence the importance of balanced eating.
Exercise and weight
If you are in shape before you become pregnant, it will be easier to stay active and you will not gain much weight when you are already pregnant. Exercise can also help improve your mood and energy levels, as well as reduce stress, something that will undoubtedly favor conception.
In women, both overweight and underweight can cause alterations in the menstrual cycle and reduce the chances of conception. Being overweight in men can reduce the amount and quality of sperm.
Cigarettes and alcohol
It is best to avoid them while trying to become pregnant as it will then be much easier not to smoke or drink throughout the pregnancy.
Quitting the habit will improve your chances of having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. It is also important for your partner to reduce these substances (ideally, to abandon them altogether) while looking for pregnancy. Cigarettes, drugs and alcohol have a negative effect on sperm quality. Compared to nonsmokers, male smokers make less sperm or a greater proportion of abnormal sperm. In women, smoking is associated with early menopause and infertility. It can also increase the risk of miscarriage and premature birth.
Alcohol can also reduce female fertility and affect sperm quality. Also increasing the risk of spontaneous abortion.
Stress and lifestyle.
Staying mentally relaxed can also help. The lower the worry and stress, the greater the likelihood of conceiving. To think that the testicles of a man are in optimal conditions when they are at a non-elevated temperature, this ascent can be caused by stress.
Also for the use of determined underwear. Therefore, wearing loose cotton underwear, non-tight pants and avoiding hot baths can improve sperm production.
Rubella is a mild illness in children and adults, but it can seriously affect the fetus. If you are not vaccinated, you should consult your doctor or midwife before attempting pregnancy.
